When you are in the process of building a home there are many different things that you will have to think about. One of the most important is the interior dcor of your home. You might for example want to use modern designs, however this is not as easy as you might imagine. There are many things that you need to bear in mind when planning a modern designed home.

Kitchen

The kitchen is a very important room in every house, it’s where everyone meets. The decisions made here about the design of the kitchen can make or break the design of the whole house. You should start by deciding whether you want an open plan kitchen, or a closed in design. Open plan is very useful if you like to talk to people while you are cooking.

You then need to think about the lighting, how much natural light will be available in your kitchen? Will you need to supplement this with task lighting? Recessed lighting and track lighting are very popular forms of lighting for use in a modern kitchen.

Many people like to have a window above the sink, so that they can daydream while washing up. You also need to consider whether you would like a double oven, built in microwave, built in dishwasher and island as these will only be possible if you cater for them in the design.

In order to plan successfully you need to decide where most of the eating will be done. You might want to create a breakfast bar, or if you have a formal dining room this might be unnecessary. Benches would provide plenty of seating, or you could use chairs if you wish.

The Living Room

All of the family will gather in this room, and so it is an important room of the house. It should be a fun and entertaining room. When you are planning this room decide whether you want to fit a built in entertainment centre or some shelving. You might want to consider specialist shelving for certain items such as gaming systems. Custom shelving could be created to hold anything that you might want to store.

You need to think about where you will put the TV. If you have a flat screen then will you mount it on the wall? If not then is there anywhere you can recess the TV into? Or would you prefer to put it on a purpose made entertainment centre. If you want surround sound then make sure you work out how to do this without compromising on your design, one way would be using ceiling speakers.

You should carefully locate the windows so that you get enough light and air into the home as required. Choosing the right curtain rods can help. If you have a bay window then would you like to fit a seating unit? You might also want to consider window blinds to reduce dust.

There are so many things that you need to consider when you are planning a modern home that it can be easy to lose sight of what you need to do, however with enough thought it is possible to succeed.

Of all the different materials available to build kitchen cabinets, oak stands on its own for its unique beauty and luster. Whether stained light or dark but beautiful oak grain will show through marking the kitchen as having the character of oaks beauty and luster. One of the greatest things about oak kitchen cabinets is they can cleaned, sanded and refinished should the need ever arise and the luster of the wood will always remain.

If the kitchen is being renovated, they can be stained to match other furniture or wood trim within the kitchen. Kitchen tables and chairs constructed of oak will make a great compliment to the oak kitchen cabinets that can also be stained to match other wood storage items in the house.

Selecting the old kitchen cabinets, indicates the owner is interested in something that is durable and timeless and reflects their appreciation for quality. Cabinets made from plastic and pressed wood and are covered with an oak veneer may offer a similar look to actual oak. But when you look closely you can see what the materials actually are.

The Extra Preparation Needed for Oak

Oak is heavier than many other materials, such as pine and even walnut, but as a hard wood it is worth its weight in durability. Appropriately stained and coated oak kitchen cabinets will shed stains and marks like the back of a duck repels water. To keep up beauty of your cabinets, and occasional cleaning and waxing every two or three years will keep them looking like new.

There are folks that will use contact paper over plywood in an attempt to make their kitchen look as though it has oak kitchen cabinets, but nothing can hold the glow like real oak. Even though oak is not as hard as mahogany, oak is still used by many craftsmen who build furniture from scratch. Unfortunately, there are some factories churning out oak kitchen cabinets mush faster than the trees can grow, and while they are just as durable, they are all the same and lack the unique quality available with a custom set of cabinets.

The price of real oak kitchen cabinets may be out of reach for many folks’ budget, but if they are though of as an investment, they will more value to the home than the price of cabinets.

Change The Kitchen Countertops

Remodeling counter top may be easier than you think. There is no reason for counter top renovations to be extremely difficult. The degree of difficulty that it takes for removal of the current counter depends on what it is made of. Also the length of time that the counter top has been down also will influence the level of difficulty. Laminated counter tops are attached with glue to wood surfaces. This can require a solvent to loosen up the glue. If that doesn’t work then you may have to gouge through the wood before it can be completely removed.

Sometimes the best way to remodel kitchen counter tops is to replace the whole top. Taking it off of the counter base should be a very easy ordeal. Simply loosen a few screws and bolts and take it off. The cabinets should now be exposed and the surface that the counter is connected to can be washed and sanded to make room for the placement of a new counter top.

The type of counter top chosen for the remodel is based on personal preference and the allotted budget. Pre-made counter tops can be purchased from home improvement stores. They can be set in place with ease and connected to cabinets. This is the simplest way to remodel counter tops if you are installing them yourself. Having a professional put down counter top is of course, the easiest way possible.

Do with stone or granite if you are looking for a more attractive counter top. Marble is also a great choice for counter tops. While it can be more costly than traditional counter top, it is much more beautiful than a wood top. Having these counter tops ordered and precut is a must, unless the homeowner is skilled enough to do this.

A hole for the kitchen sink and water supplies has to be made fro custom jobs. The splashboard has to be placed correctly in order to stop water from coming into the cabinets. This type of counter remodeling is a little bit more difficult so a professional should probably the one to do it. Working with water and stone can be very difficult and if stone if cut the wrong way it can wind up costing a fortune to get it fixed.

Vinyl and plastic countertops are not recommended. They can easily be cut by utensils and they often do not match the rest of the dcor. Countertops should fit in nicely with the rest of the room. Be sure that you find a material that looks great with the rest of your decor.
