Home Décor Fabric: The Dos and Don’ts

Home Decor No Comments »

When it comes to decorating your home, fabric choice is very important. After all, the wrong kind of fabric makes for a very uncomfortable couch, or unattractive draperies. There are several ways to approach choosing the right home décor fabric.

Home Décor Fabric #1: Silk

Silk is an expensive and beautiful fabric, there is no doubt about that. However, it makes for rather cumbersome home décor fabric, because it can look rather heavy in appearance.

If you want to use silk for your draperies, by all means do so. Just be sure that the color you are using is not very dark, otherwise the effect might be overwhelming. Silk is best for draperies when it is in light colors.

Silk always works well as home décor fabric for bedroom sets. No only do silk sheets feel quite nice, they also look quite nice, and are a great means of fancy, yet useful, home décor fabric.

Home Décor Fabric #2: Velvet

Velvet is one of those fabrics that is hard to decorate with. While it can look nice in some homes, it can also look quite ugly in others. It all depends on the overall scheme of the home décor. As a rule, velvet looks nice as upholstery and as draperies only in a home that is striving for that Victorian look.

If, however, you are insistent upon decorating with velvet and your home does not have a Victorian look, there are several things to keep in mind when using velvet as home décor fabric. Velvet fades easily when placed in sunlight, stains are hard to remove from it, and it also has a tendency to attract lint and dirt.

Home Décor Fabric #3: Cotton

If there was ever a home décor fabric that works well in any form, it is cotton. Just as cotton works well for attire, so it also works well for all types of home décor. Use it as upholstery for furniture or for draperies. It can easily be cleaned, and can be fade-resistant.

Need More Information?

If there is a particular type of home décor fabric you are considering using, do you research on it and compares it with other types. This can easily be done by consulting home décor magazines, or by searching for information on the internet. Whatever way you go about it, just remember to plan accordingly, and you home décor will reflect your effort.

Adding the Perfect Home Décor Accessory

The focal point of your room has been established and the furniture is in place, but it needs something more. That “something” is probably going to come in the form of home décor accessories. A room can never be complete without the proper amount of accessories and additions to pull the look of a room together.

Most home decorators are always on the lookout for the perfect home décor accessory to add to bland and uninteresting room. One way to narrow down your choice of home décor accessories is by selecting a theme for your room. Use this theme to determine the color and accessories that would work the most effectively with your selected style. If you decide to add a home décor accessory to your side tables, try to keep the height of the accessory level with your sofa. Small items will not fit the scale of the area, and will not make a dramatic statement on your side tables. Scale is a very important consideration when adding accessories to any piece of furniture, including bookcases, armoires, and even the floor.

Adding art to a room can make an immediate difference. While too many pictures will only serve to clutter a space, adding one or two main pieces can transform a room. Art home décor accessories can add color and definition to a room by creating a focal point that you can work from. Aligning the artwork with other pieces of varying heights, or grouping together a set of coordinating artwork makes a room come alive. As with any home décor accessory, try to bring your style together by using the colors that you have chosen for your room.

Where to find the Perfect Home Décor Accessory

Flea markets are one of the best places for treasure hunting. Sellers come together to offer their goods, giving you a greater chance to find that special and unique home décor accessory that matches your theme. This is a bargain shopper’s dream, since local people sell at flea markets who may not know the value of their belongings. Some consider flea markets to be really large yard sales, but either way you should have no problem finding something fun and inexpensive to add to your collection.

Antique stores are also a smart way to find home décor accessories. Although they tend to be a bit more expensive, you have the opportunity to purchase items that have history and meaning to them. You can find antique stores that deal with every era and style of furniture to find a rare vase, plate, or pillow that will fit in perfectly with your room.

Finishing Touches for your Home Décor

Decorating any room can be an arduous process, but eventually all the window treatments and pictures will be hung, and the furniture will be arranged just right. You gaze upon your room, and realize that it just doesn’t look finished. If your home décor is missing something and you are unsure what it is, there are some tips you can use to complete any newly decorated room with your personal style.

Home décor can be a tricky process. You want to make sure it shows your style, flair, and family heirlooms without looking overdone. Plants and flowers are a great way to dress up a bland room in no time. You don’t need anything expensive or dramatic; you can simply add a potted plant on a side table, or find a wonderful silk plant for a high shelf. Adding greenery of any type will spice up a room.

Gather some of your favorite things from around the house. It could be a family heirloom, a well worn book, sporting equipment, or even an old teapot that you don’t use anymore. Group your items in an attractive collection on a bare shelf, or adorn a bookcase with a few of your favorite knick knacks to give a personal touch to your home décor.

A Work in Progress

The best part of home décor is that your room doesn’t have to be put together in one day. It can take a week, a month, or a year to find the perfect piece that fits in. Have fun shopping at yard sales or flea markets to find a one-of-a-kind piece that you adore. Home décor is a way of showing off your personality, your interests, and your passions in life.

Color can be a wonderful way to dress up your home décor. Take a favorite color and add different pieces of that color over time that will add pizzazz to your room. Don’t overuse the color; just add little accents along the way to pull a room together. It could be a color in a painting or a rug, but just choose one or two hues you like and run with them.

Another way to add life to your home décor is to take pictures of your family as they grow older. That way your room can still stay current while showing off the loves of your life. You can either replace older photos with more recent ones, or start a wall or shelf of pictures that you can add to. An important tip to remember is that you should use the same color and style of frames so that it doesn’t look too eclectic – unless that is the style you are going for. It is generally more pleasing to the eye to have a collection of silver frames, or another style that coordinates well.

Home décor is a way to accent a room, not to overwhelm an area. Begin with one major focal point and keep your room comfortable and beautiful with a few choice items.
